Chance Romero; 36 years old; Scott, La.; sentenced for armed robbery; incarcerated since 1997; first-time offender:
At a birthday party, Chance Romero's sister was raped, and the rapist was beaten to death. Chance's friend received a guilty sentence for murder, and Chance's charges were brought down to armed robbery.
Because his family had no funds, his mother attempted to rob a bank so to pay for his legal fees; she was freed after serving 12 years in prison.
Chance's story merits help because he and his friend defended his raped sister; the law gives forgiveness for such action, the charges usually being manslaughter because it was a situation committed in 'the heat of passion, as the lawbook describes. There is also the charge of self-defense murder or the charge of negligent homicide. All these charges give a short prison sentence or no prison time at all. If Chance and his friend had a good lawyer, they would have had a better defense in court so as not to receive such a harsh punishment. The lives of these two men have been severely affected by their excessive prison terms.
Please pray for Chance Romero, and if you can offer any help, please send us an e-mail.
Words from Chance- "I am really seeking some support to get out of prison and to help me 'hit the ground running,' so to speak. I have been gone a long time, and it would be best to have a job lined up along with the support of the people who want to help me start over. I am very talented when it comes to making things out of wood. From cabinets to coat racks to rocking chairs, I can make anything. I lost my father in 2006 and didn't have much family anymore."
